are made.
We publish the classics with the century around them: the complete text, paintings made in the same years, and an account of the moment each book came out of. You have read the story; this is the world it came from.
The text
Complete and unabridged. Nothing is cut, condensed or paraphrased, and no passage is rewritten to be easier.
What follows present-day American usage is the spelling and the punctuation. The sentences underneath are the author’s, word for word.
The plates
Each volume is illustrated with full-page paintings, chosen for that book. They are reproduced full page and named with painter and year.
A picture we cannot attribute does not go in. Every volume states how many it holds.
The volume
Newly set: its own cover art, the ornament of its series above each chapter, a drop capital on the opening page, running heads that tell you where you are.
Nine shelves, one standard of setting. Thirty of the works are issued a second time on a tenth — the gift shelf — art-directed one at a time.
