Aeneas.Press

About

A second life for great books.

Aeneas Press exists for one reason: the greatest books ever written should not be left behind by the language they were written in. Spelling drifts, punctuation hardens, references fade — and a masterpiece that once spoke plainly to its readers starts to feel like a locked door.

We open that door. We take works that have entered the public domain and prepare careful Modern Classics editions: archaic spellings updated, dense or dated passages clarified, obscure references gently footnoted. What we never touch is the author’s voice. The wit, the rhythm, the argument, the soul of the thing — all of it stays.

Our method

Every title passes through a disciplined editorial pipeline. A first pass modernizes orthography and resolves genuine barriers to comprehension. A second pass checks, line by line, that nothing of substance has been altered — no simplification of ideas, no flattening of style. Only when an edition reads cleanly and proves faithful to the original does it enter the library.

Free to read

Because these works belong to everyone, our reading editions are free to read online. Where you’d like a copy to keep, we offer beautifully typeset print and e-book editions through the usual stores — but you never need to buy anything to read a classic here.

The name is a nod to Aeneas, who carried what mattered out of a burning city into a new world. That is, more or less, the whole idea.
