Acquiring
Every title is supplied worldwide through the usual ebook wholesale channels, so a library orders it exactly as it orders anything else — by ISBN, through its existing supplier. No separate account with this house is needed.
For a standing order, the full catalogue as a file, or a series taken whole, write to the trade desk and say which supplier you buy through.
What is in one
The complete work, unabridged. Spelling and punctuation in present-day American usage. Full-page plates, each named with its painter. Running heads, a drop capital, and the ornament of its series.
These are reading editions. They carry no critical apparatus, no variant readings and no scholarly introduction, and they are not offered as a source for citation of the original text.
In a classroom
Modern spelling removes the first obstacle a class meets and leaves every other one intact: the sentences, the length, the argument and the difficulty are the author’s. A student reading one of these is reading the book, not a retelling of it.
What suits a particular class is a teacher’s judgement, not ours. The library is old literature written for adults, and it is presented that way.
For cataloguing: the house carries one readership marking across the list — sixteen and over — and departs from it only where a particular volume calls for it. That marking is a policy, not a reading of each book, and it is stated here rather than printed on every page as though each had been assessed on its own.
Cataloguing
Each edition has one ISBN and one record. Where a work is also issued as a gift edition, that is a second product with its own ISBN and its own art, not a reprint of the first.
