The life

Abraham Cahan fled Tsarist Russia after the 1881 pogroms and became the founding editor of the Jewish Daily Forward, which he ran for half a century and built into the largest Yiddish newspaper in the world. He wrote in both Yiddish and English, tutored William Dean Howells in immigrant New York, and produced in David Levinsky the first great novel of the American Jewish arrival.
