Alfred de Vigny

Alfred de Vigny was a French poet, novelist and dramatist who served thirteen years as an officer without seeing a battle, and made that disillusion his subject. Cinq-Mars (1826) was the first important French historical novel, written under Walter Scott's influence. A stoic pessimist who withdrew from Paris society, he was elected to the Académie française on his seventh attempt.
