The life
André Theuriet spent his boyhood in the forests of Lorraine and never really left them: his novels and verse return again and again to woodcutters, foresters and village girls, written with a botanist's precision about trees. He worked thirty years as a civil servant in the Ministry of Finance, wrote in the evenings, and was elected to the Académie française at sixty-three.
