The life

Anthony Hope was the pen name of Anthony Hope Hawkins, an English barrister who conceived The Prisoner of Zenda while walking home from a court case and wrote it in a month. Its success let him leave the law at thirty-one, and it created the Ruritanian romance — an invented Central European kingdom that a hundred imitators promptly borrowed. He was knighted for propaganda work in the Great War.
