The life
Arthur Machen was a Welsh author of supernatural and weird fiction whose boyhood among the Roman ruins of Gwent shaped everything he wrote. The Great God Pan (1894) was denounced as degenerate and sold well because of it. His wartime story The Bowmen was so widely mistaken for fact that it created the legend of the Angels of Mons, which he spent years vainly denying.
