The life

Augusta Jane Evans was an American novelist from Alabama and one of the first women in the United States to earn a fortune by writing. A fierce Confederate partisan, she nursed soldiers and wrote propaganda during the Civil War; her novel St. Elmo was so popular afterwards that towns, steamboats and countless children were named for its hero.
