The life

Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was a French engineer and naturalist who spent three years on the Île de France, now Mauritius, and set his one famous book there. Paul et Virginie (1788) made him rich and moved a generation to tears; Napoleon admired it. A disciple of Rousseau, he ended his life as director of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
