The life

Charles de Bernard was a French novelist and journalist from Besançon, drawn into literature by Balzac, who read his admiring review and befriended him. He wrote light, ironic novels of provincial society and adultery, admired for their polish and wit, and died of tuberculosis at forty-five, his reputation overshadowed by the master he had followed.
