The life
Charles Reade was an English novelist and dramatist who campaigned in fiction against the abuses of his day — private asylums, brutal prisons, trade union violence — and kept vast notebooks of newspaper cuttings to document every charge. The Cloister and the Hearth, his historical novel of the father of Erasmus, was called by Swinburne the greatest historical novel in the language.
