Daniel Defoe

Daniel Defoe was an English writer, merchant and government agent who came to fiction late, publishing Robinson Crusoe at fifty-nine. He was pilloried and imprisoned for a satirical pamphlet, went bankrupt more than once, and produced some five hundred works, from journalism to A Journal of the Plague Year. He is often called the father of the English novel.
