The life
E. W. Hornung was an English writer and Conan Doyle's brother-in-law, who created Raffles, the gentleman burglar — deliberately inverting Holmes and Watson into a thief and his admiring accomplice. Doyle disapproved, thinking it dangerous to make a criminal the hero. Hornung spent two years in Australia as a young man for his asthma, and lost his only son at Ypres.
