The life
Edward Payson Roe was a Presbyterian minister who had served as a chaplain at Gettysburg and turned novelist after the Chicago fire of 1871 moved him to write about it. Critics dismissed his books as sermons with plots; readers made him the best-selling American novelist of his day, and he retired to grow small fruit in the Hudson Valley on the proceeds.
