The life

Edwin Lester Arnold was an English writer and the son of a noted scholar of Eastern religion. Gulliver of Mars (1905) sent its hero to Mars on a flying carpet seven years before Burroughs sent John Carter, and sold so badly that Arnold gave up fiction entirely. It is now recognised as the first planetary romance in English.
