Elizabeth Inchbald

Elizabeth Inchbald ran away from a Suffolk farm at eighteen to go on the stage, despite a stammer that never left her, and acted for seventeen years before writing plays that made her rich. Widowed young, courted by many and married to none, she edited a twenty-five volume theatre collection and wrote two novels — one of which Jane Austen borrowed for the theatricals in Mansfield Park.
