The life

F. Marion Crawford was an American novelist who lived most of his life in Italy, in a villa above Sorrento, and wrote more than forty books at a pace that alarmed his admirers. Born in Rome to a sculptor father, he studied Sanskrit, edited a newspaper in India, and moved between historical romance, society novels and the ghost stories — The Upper Berth among them — that outlived everything else he wrote.
