The life

Flora Annie Steel spent twenty-two years in India as the wife of a colonial official, learned Punjabi, served as an inspector of girls' schools and collected the folk tales she later published. Her novel of the 1857 uprising, On the Face of the Waters, was unusual in giving weight to the Indian side. She was called the female Kipling, and disliked it.
