Francis Hopkinson Smith

Francis Hopkinson Smith built the foundation of the Statue of Liberty and the Race Rock Lighthouse, painted watercolours good enough to hang in major museums, and did not publish his first novel until he was fifty. He then turned out a book a year, told stories on the lecture circuit in a Virginia accent he had inherited but never lived with, and claimed engineering was the easier trade.
