The life

George Borrow was an English writer and traveller who mastered some dozen languages, tramped across Spain selling Bibles for a missionary society, and lived among Romani people whose speech he recorded when almost no one else troubled to. His books blur memoir and fiction so thoroughly that scholars still argue which parts happened; he once walked from Norwich to London in twenty-seven hours.
