George Eliot

George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, who chose it to be read seriously and to shield a private life that scandalised Victorian England: she lived openly for twenty-four years with George Henry Lewes, who could not divorce. A formidable scholar and translator before she wrote fiction, she produced Middlemarch, which Woolf called one of the few English novels written for grown-up people.
