George Gissing

George Gissing was an English novelist whose brilliant academic career ended at eighteen when he was caught stealing to support a young prostitute he hoped to reform, and later married. He was expelled, jailed a month, and spent the rest of his life writing about poverty, failure and the literary trade from the inside. New Grub Street remains the bleakest account of authorship in English.
