The life

George Saintsbury was an English critic and professor at Edinburgh, a man of prodigious reading who wrote histories of criticism, of English prosody and of the French novel. He was also a serious drinker and connoisseur: his Notes on a Cellar-Book is still in print, and a wine society was founded in his name.
