The life

Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish writer, the son of a cobbler, who arrived in Copenhagen at fourteen with nothing and was educated at the king's expense. The world remembers the fairy tales — some 150 of them, translated into more than 125 languages — but he wrote novels, plays and travel books for adults and considered those his real work. He never married, and proposed unsuccessfully to Jenny Lind.
