The life

Henry Fielding wrote farces until Walpole's government passed a licensing act to shut his theatre down, so he read for the bar and turned novelist out of spite and necessity — Tom Jones is the result. As chief magistrate of Westminster he founded the Bow Street Runners, London's first police force, and broke his health doing it. He died at forty-seven in Lisbon, seeking a cure.
