The life

Hermann Hesse was a German-born novelist and poet who fled a seminary at fourteen and trained instead as a bookseller. His travels in India and his sessions with a pupil of Jung fed the spiritual searching that runs through Siddhartha, Steppenwolf and The Glass Bead Game. An outspoken pacifist in both wars, he took Swiss citizenship and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946.
