The life
Horace Walpole was an English writer, collector and politician, son of Britain's first prime minister, who turned his villa at Strawberry Hill into a Gothic fantasy of battlements and stained glass and started an architectural fashion. The Castle of Otranto (1764), passed off at first as a translation from an old Italian manuscript, founded the Gothic novel. His letters run to some four thousand.
