Ivan Turgenev

Ivan Turgenev was a Russian novelist and the first to win a wide European readership, admired by Flaubert and Henry James alike. A Sportsman's Sketches, quiet accounts of peasant life, is said to have helped turn opinion against serfdom. Fathers and Sons gave the language the word nihilist and earned him attacks from every side, after which he spent much of his life abroad.
