The life

James Hogg was a Scottish poet and novelist known as the Ettrick Shepherd, a self-taught farm labourer who had almost no schooling and herded sheep into his thirties. Walter Scott befriended and patronised him. The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner was ignored for a century, then rediscovered by André Gide, who called it a work of near-diabolical genius.
