Jennette Lee

Jennette Lee taught English at Smith College and wrote quiet, widely loved American fiction; Uncle William, her portrait of a Maine fisherman too easygoing to prosper, became a bestseller in 1906 and ran to sequels. She later invented Millicent Newberry, a Boston detective who solves cases with knitting needles in her lap and prefers mercy to arrests.
