The life

John Kendrick Bangs edited Harper's humour pages and invented a genre that still bears his name: Bangsian fantasy, in which the famous dead — Shakespeare, Boswell, Cleopatra — squabble on a houseboat on the Styx. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Yonkers, lectured across America, and made comedy out of the afterlife decades before anyone thought it a respectable subject.
