The life

John Philip Sousa was the March King — leader of the U.S. Marine Band under five presidents, composer of The Stars and Stripes Forever, and the man whose name still rides on the sousaphone he helped design. Less known is that he wrote three novels and an autobiography, and campaigned furiously against the phonograph, which he called canned music that would kill amateur playing in American homes.
