The life

Joseph Addison was an English essayist, poet and politician who with Richard Steele founded The Spectator in 1711 and, in daily essays of a page or two, largely invented the form. He served as a Member of Parliament and Secretary of State, and Dr Johnson advised anyone who wished to write well to give his days and nights to Addison's prose.
