The life

Jules Claretie was a French novelist, journalist and, for twenty-eight years, director of the Comédie-Française. He reported the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune, wrote some forty books, and was elected to the Académie française. A tireless chronicler of Parisian life, he kept a diary of the theatre that historians still mine.
