Kate Chopin

Kate Chopin was an American writer widowed at thirty-two with six children, who began publishing to support them and drew on the Louisiana Creole world she had married into. The Awakening (1899) was condemned for the frankness of its heroine's desires and effectively ended her career; she wrote little afterwards. It was rediscovered in the 1960s and is now read as an early landmark of American feminist fiction.
