The life

Mary Elizabeth Braddon was an English novelist who acted on stage under a false name to support her mother, then wrote more than eighty novels. Lady Audley's Secret (1862) made her the queen of the sensation novel and rich enough to run her own magazine. She lived for years with her publisher, unable to marry while his wife was confined in an asylum in Ireland.
