M. G. Lewis

Matthew Gregory Lewis was an English novelist who wrote The Monk in ten weeks, at nineteen, while serving as a junior diplomat in The Hague. Published in 1796, it was so lurid that a prosecution was threatened and Lewis, by then a Member of Parliament, issued a bowdlerised edition; the nickname Monk Lewis stuck for life. He died at forty-two of fever, at sea.
