Margaret Hill McCarter

Margaret Hill McCarter taught school in Kansas and then wrote the state into fiction — prairie romances of sunflowers, drought and small colleges that sold in the hundreds of thousands. In 1920 she became the first woman to address a Republican National Convention, and she used the platform much as she used her novels: to insist that the middle of the country had a voice worth hearing.
