The life

Maria Edgeworth was an Anglo-Irish novelist who helped run her father's estate in County Longford and put what she learned there into Castle Rackrent (1800), the first regional novel in English and the first told entirely in an Irish servant's voice. Walter Scott said her Irish books gave him the idea for Waverley. During the famine she worked to feed the local poor, into her eighties.
