The life
Mariano Azuela was a Mexican novelist and physician who served as an army doctor with Pancho Villa's forces and wrote The Underdogs from the saddle, publishing it in a El Paso newspaper in 1915. Ignored for a decade, it was rediscovered in 1925 and became the founding novel of the Mexican Revolution. He practised medicine among the poor of Mexico City to the end.
