Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman

Mary E. Wilkins Freeman wrote the definitive stories of New England's stubborn, straitened women — A New England Nun and Other Stories made her reputation and still holds it. She married late and unhappily, had her husband committed, and in 1926 became the first woman awarded the Howells Medal for fiction by the American Academy. This Virginia romance is her venture away from home ground.
