Mary Jane Holmes

Mary Jane Holmes sold something like two million books — outsold in her century by almost no American woman except Harriet Beecher Stowe — with orphan heiresses, cruel relations and country girls who turn out to be somebody. The critics never reviewed her and the readers never stopped buying; she wrote thirty-nine novels from a comfortable house in Brockport, New York, and was forgotten within a generation.
