The life

Mary Johnston was an American novelist from Virginia, largely self-taught after illness ended her schooling, who became one of the best-selling authors in the country with To Have and to Hold. She researched her historical novels exhaustively, campaigned for women's suffrage as a founder of Virginia's Equal Suffrage League, and wrote two Civil War novels that treated the Confederate cause with unusual scepticism for a Southerner of her day.
