The life

Mary Murdoch Mason left almost no trace beyond Mae Madden, her 1876 novel of a headstrong American girl loose in Italy, published with an introductory poem by Joaquin Miller. It belongs to the era's favourite theme — the New World heroine measured against the Old — and survives as one of the few such books written from inside a young woman's impatience rather than about it.
