Maturin M. Ballou

1820–1895 1 volume Adventure & the Sea

The life

Maturin M. Ballou founded Ballou's Pictorial and, with a partner, the first American story paper, turning out cheap romances of the Orient and the sea by the yard. He was also the first editor of the Boston Globe, a tireless traveller who wrote guidebooks to four continents, and he built much of his fiction on places he had actually seen.
