May Agnes Fleming

May Agnes Fleming was a New Brunswick schoolteacher who became one of the first Canadians to make a living entirely by the pen, selling sensation novels to New York story papers at fifteen and negotiating her own contracts. Her plots run on masked figures, secret marriages and heroines buried alive; she wrote more than forty of them and died at thirty-nine, at the height of her sales.
