The life

Oliver Goldsmith was an Anglo-Irish writer who failed at medicine, teaching and the church, wandered Europe playing the flute for meals, and then wrote a masterpiece in every form he touched: the novel in The Vicar of Wakefield, the play in She Stoops to Conquer, the poem in The Deserted Village. A friend of Johnson and Reynolds, he died at forty-five owing £2,000.
