Oliver Wendell Holmes

Oliver Wendell Holmes was an American physician, poet and essayist who coined the term anaesthesia and argued, years before Semmelweis was heeded, that doctors themselves carried childbed fever from patient to patient. Dean of Harvard Medical School and a founder of The Atlantic Monthly, he named it and filled it with the Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table papers. His son became a Supreme Court justice.
