Richard Chenevix Trench

Richard Chenevix Trench was an Irish-born churchman and philologist who rose to be Archbishop of Dublin. In 1857 he read a paper on the deficiencies of English dictionaries that set in motion the project which became the Oxford English Dictionary. His popular lectures on words made etymology a Victorian parlour subject, and he wrote poetry admired by Tennyson.
