Samuel Butler

Samuel Butler quarrelled with his clergyman father, emigrated to New Zealand, doubled his money farming sheep, and came home to spend the rest of his life attacking everything he had been raised to revere — Darwin, the Church, and the Victorian family. Erewhon appeared anonymously in 1872 and was briefly credited to someone more famous. The Way of All Flesh, his demolition of his own upbringing, he kept unpublished until he was dead.
